Seasons of Change

A great deal of excitement has taken place for me over the past several weeks. I recently became engaged and started planning a November 2008 wedding in New Jersey. I planned on relocating to St. Louis to start my life with my fiancé/husband after the wedding. However, a series of events have proven that my move to St. Louis will be taking place much sooner than I imagined.

Back in October I received a random e-mail from a headhunter in St. Louis about a position they were looking to fill. I read the e-mail out of curiosity and before too long, I had started the application process with Chamberlain. Four interviews and an on-line assessment later, I found out I was one of the top two candidates. I was delighted to hear this news; however, I honestly had no idea as to how all of this would play out, but I had a perfect peace either way. Last week I received a call and was offered the position at Chamberlain College of Nursing. God has truly orchestrated this blessing. This opportunity will allow me to continue my professional growth within the field of higher education, as I truly enjoy the reward of assisting students in pursing their passions. Not to mention it puts me in the same city as my honey. Woo-Hoo.

The school has approximately 500 students and I will be managing the admissions team of four admissions counselors and two support staff. I am very excited about this new journey that begins on Monday, December 10th.

So, my to-do list has grown and I'm feeling a wee-bit overwhelmed in having to plan for the holidays, transitioning into a new job, finding a place to live for the year in St. Louis, and keeping up with wedding preparations --- I could use all of your thoughts and prayers. BIG Smile. These are certainly exciting times for myself.

Friends and family, here's to yet another adventure in life's many seasons of change!

The Nebraska Nightmare...

Tuesday: October 22nd, 2007

The day started off very rough as Melissa (my new Admissions Counselor) and I were having a very difficult time finding our way around the UNL campus... not to mention there were torrential downpours, and inummerable flooded roads; however, we had no idea of the other events the day was about to present us with.

The fair was a disappointment as we spoke to maybe one prospect, so we packed up a wee-bit early to hit the road and get to Omaha sooner than later. At this point, all is well, we're heading East on Interstate 80 and making great time.... but, "Wait a minute, something doesn't sound right. Is that our car? Do we have a flat? Yepper, we have a flat on an insanely busy highway. Oh well, I recently had to deal with a flat, so this wasn't a terrible horror -- it just complicates the day and we'll have to deal with a zillion "now what's" because of it being a rental car.

A truck finally arrives to put the spare tire on and we're told by Enterprise that we can drive on the spare for up to 3000 miles at 55 mph. Ummm, I don't think so -- what are our other options? Get the tire replaced, but we would need to ensure that we have it approved by our original rental office, and that it will be paid for by them. After several calls and uncooperative Enterprise sales reps ---- Done. We just need to get the car to the Firestone in downtown Omaha and we'll be good to go.

We were only 30 miles outside of Omaha and it's around 4 p.m., so we have plenty of time to make all of this happen . Being that our hotel was only 5 minutes away Firestone, we decided to check in first.... the corporate credit card declines. Great!!! It's 4:55 p.m. and we have no other form of payment. I made a call to the office and asked for them to check into this and told the clerk that we'll be back, being that we were on time crunch with getting our tire replaced.

After a series of calls were made and hoops were jumped through the issue was resolved; however, my nerves were on the edge of a complete meltdown.

We're now off to Firestone. We arrive and confirm that they can take care of us and bill Enterprise. Phew!! They don't have the tire in stock, but can have it tomorrow morning... not a problem, we can swing by prior to the fair. So, let's get some food in our system. It was getting late and we were both exhausted.

We jump back in the car and I start to back out of the parking lot onto 20th street, but somehow didn't see the large light pole that was behind me. I side swiped the freaking pole.... that's right, I side swiped the freaking pole. At this point, all we could do was laugh (I'm sure that was out of hysteria/shock). My cell phone rings, it's Joe (VP of Finance at Forest) -- I remained very calm, discussed the credit card issues and simply didn't even mention the other nightmares involved in our day. By now, we're just unsure of what to do. We knew we were covered by the Rental Car coverage, so we decided to grab some dinner at a restaurant (recommended by a friend) and worry about the rest of the details later. I mean, why not??

We pull into the restaurants parking lot and get out to see the damage... HOLY CRAP, didn't realize it was that bad -- and the door won't shut. Okay, so our problem is much bigger than we expected. We called Roadside Assistance again and we're told to get an accident report and go to the nearest Enterprise location (if one was open) to exchange cars. We RETURNED to Firestone, called 911 and waited patiently for an officer to arrive. All of that to find out that he couldn't write up an accident report because it happened on private property... which was a very good thing, considering the officer said that if it had happened on the street, he might have had to write me a ticket (however, he did assure me that considering all of the other events of the day, he would have done everything in his power not to do that to me). UNBELIEVABLE.

Now what? We call the Enterprise (airport location) here in Omaha because it was still open, but they couldn't swap cars without verifying with our original rental location, which happened to be closed --- sooo, we have to wait till morning. Okay... we'll survive for the night with our hunk of junk (lol). We'll grab a bite to eat and FINALLY check into the hotel.

But how were you driving around and parking the car if the door wouldn't shut? I know that's what you're asking yourself.... well, we wrapped the seatbelt through the door handle and fastened it into the seatbelt buckle. I would then crawl over and out of the passenger side. Good stinkin' times....

I was up bright and early on Wednesday -- called SGF Enterprise, and we were off to the airport to swap out cars. All is successful, and within 30 minutes we were headed to Creighton University hoping for an uneventful day....and I'm delighted to say, Mission Accomplished! Thank you, Jesus!!

Who's Stealing your Joy?

Are you a people pleaser? Always giving, always encouraging, always rescuing? God does not want you to sacrifice your happiness to keep somebody else happy. That's what I call "a false sense of responsibility." When you free yourself from that—and give those people to God—you'll not only have more time and energy, but I believe you'll be happier and better able to fulfill God's plan for you. -Author Unknown
